Hi lots of fresh snow and freezing temperatures at the quarry this week. Here are some of the pics. It was the first time that I have been there completely alone not surprising as it was minus 10.5 !!!!!

New Years Day 2010
After a gap of 7 months I have managed to get back to the Quarry. Things started to get really busy spring time last year with weddings and other photography work. But I am determined to complete a full cycle of a year in the life of the Quarry. Today was a symbolic visit really. I wanted to capture the snow and, believe it or not this was my first chance....the light was not brilliant but I took a few snaps.

Next I intend to concentrate on the portraits of the climbers who play there. There were even a few hardy souls bouldering today!

A big thank you to everyone who has sent back my questionnaire postcards. They have been left at the climbing wall in Kendal for people to pick up and complete and drop off there or post back to me.

They are already providing an interesting insight into what motivates you to climb. Here are some of the things that you would give up to climb:-

I have finally managed to get back to the Quarry, life has been very hectic lately!, I just caught some boulderers on their way home and managed to grab a shot or two of them. But since getting home I have been starting to play with the way I want the photographs of the climbers to look like. I want to get the atmoshere of an old photo in my photograph but still be modern. I am thinking that they may be printed quite small and the landscapes very large but still thinking about it.
I will get some of the other pics up soon....... not that many as my battery went just as i was getting into photographing some chalkmarks.

Boxing Day and the quarry was busy with a number of groups of people out for a afternoon walk. It has taken a while to get these photo's onto the blog - xmas and colds are the main reasons.

Every time I have visited the quarry there have been climbers climbing and today was no exception. These two hardy souls - it was freezing even though the sun was shining - were climbing Coral Sea. I great route which was the first that I lead over 20 years ago. Although not with numb fingers! I didn't stop to talk to the climbers or take their portraits as I find it a bit annoying if bystanders try to talk to me when I am concentrating on climbing. But I must start getting more pictures and interviews with the climbers. I have some email addresses and may email out to the people I have photographed so far.

Yesterday I went to see an exhibition at the Boo in East Lancashire of work by five artists who were commissioned to respond to the quarries of the area. The project was called 'Valley of Stone' I found it inspirational especially some charcoal drawings of the rock layers. I think that has influenced the pictures that I took at Trowbough yesterday.

Surprisingly there was a climber at the quarry. There had been a hard frost over night and I really didn't expect to see any one climbing but I met Tom who was doing a bit of bouldering enjoying the winter sun.

My third visit was a damp late afternoon, there were not many leaves left on the trees and Red Wall was much more visable than in the summer. It reminded me of an aboriginal painting. A small group were making a climbing video of Jean Genie on Main Wall.

On my second visit to the quarry I arrived quite early (for me) on a Sunday morning, at first the light was disapointing but the sun soon broke through the clouds producing some lovely contrasts between the autumn colours and the grey rock. At first I was alone but later a man and his son arrived walking their dog. Not long after that two men arrived to check out the large bouldering rock before coming back with their gear. I took my first portraits, didn't really go in to the questionaires yet need to sort out the questions. But it feel like the project is begining.

My first visit to the quarry was a sunny afternoon, three pairs of climbers were taking advantage and getting a few routes in the last of the early evening sun. I took some initial picture to ge the project started. Need to sort out info about the blog and what I want to ask people.
